Guastella's Career High Helps Quinnipiac Past Siena, 70-49
HAMDEN, Conn. – Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) had the hot hand on Saturday afternoon as she netted six threes en route to a career high 22 points to lead the Quinnipiac women's basketball team past Siena, 70-49, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 11-8 overall but more importantly went to three games over .500 in MAAC play (6-3).
Guastella was 6-of-11 from behind the arc and matched another career high with 13 rebounds to complete her second double-double of the season. She also filled the stat sheet with two blocks and two steals in 33 minutes of action.
Three of her teammates joined her with double-digits offensively – Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.), Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.). McQuain totaled 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds and three blocks. Martin finished with 10 points and five rebounds while Abshire added 10 points and a game high nine assists.
The first half of the game never saw a lead of more than five points for either team. Quinnipiac and Siena shot very similarly with the Bobcats shooting 37.9 percent while the Saints shot 34.6 percent. McQuain had nine points at the half on 4-of-5 shooting while Guastella had eight points and seven rebounds at the half.
After a closely played first half, the trend continued over the first 11 minutes of the second half. With 8:38 to go Guastella hit a three to give Quinnipiac their largest lead, 49-41. The Bobcats would finish the last eight minutes of the game on a 21-8 run. Guastella would score 14 points on 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-7 beyond the arc in the second half.
10 players would score for the Bobcats in the game. Quinnipiac would finish the game shooting 40.4 percent. The Bobcats improved defensively in the second half, as they held the Saints 28.6 percent in the second half.
For the second consecutive game Quinnipiac held their opponent under 50 points. Quinnipiac, winners of three in a row, is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 with an away game at Rider University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J.
