HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bobcats put together a strong second half of basketball on Sunday afternoon, and coasted to a comfortable win over Canisius College, 65-51, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. Winners in seven out of their last eight games now, the Bobcats improved to 15-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play behind 18 points from senior forward Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.).
Quinnipiac's Female January Athlete of the Month played a large role in the team's third straight win. McQuain went 8-of-13 from the floor and grabbed a game-high of seven rebounds. She also added three steals, a block and an assist in the triumph.
Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored seven points in the first half and six in the second for her fourth straight game in double-figures. Her 13 points came on 5-of-13 shooting which included two from long range. Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) finished with nine points and four assists, Morgan Manz (Southbury, Conn.) had eight points and three rebounds, and Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) and Maria Napolitano (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had seven. Ostergaard hauled in five rebounds as well.
Shooting woes plagued the Bobcats in the first half with the home team connecting on just 20 percent of its field goal attempts. With the scoreboard reading 18-17 in favor of the Griffins, Canisius proceeded to rattle off an 11-0 run for a double-digit lead. Canisius carried a 30-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A tale of two halves to say the least, Quinnipiac broke out of its slump with a 12-0 run to start the second half. Napolitano banged two threes and McQuain connected on a pair underneath to spearhead the surge. The lead quickly ballooned to eight points by the half's midway point, and Quinnipiac never looked back.
Despite a bit of inconsistency on the offensive end, Quinnipiac remained sound behind the ball. The Bobcats held Canisius to 41.5 percent floor but just 36 percent in the second half. Quinnipiac also won the battle on the glass in the second half, 19-14. Canisius controlled a 26-15 advantage at halftime.
With the win, Quinnipiac completed the series sweep of Canisius. The Bobcats also improved to 13-2 when holding their opponent under 70 points and 8-3 at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Canisius, who drops to 9-14 overall and 5-9 in league play, was led by 12 points from Jamie Ruttle and 11 points from Kayla Hoohuli. Canisius is back in action next weekend with a pair of home games.
Quinnipiac returns to action with a Valentine's Day clash against defending MAAC Champion Marist. The Red Foxes defeated the Bobcats in their first meeting back on Dec. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at McCann Field House in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
