Women's Basketball Falls To Marist, 100-81

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –  The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team had four players finish in double figures, but it was not enough as the seven time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, Marist College, defeated the visiting Bobcats, 100-81 in a game televised nationally on ESPN U. With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 15-10 overall and 10-5 in MAAC play, while the Red Foxes improve to 20-6 overall and 14-2 in MAAC play.

Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C) finished one assist shy of tying a career and school record high that she set against American on Nov. 23. She finished with six points and four rebounds to go along with 13 assists. Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped in with 18 points while Morgan Manz (Southbury, Conn.) tallied a career high 11 points.

Marist got going early connecting on three three-pointers and a layup on their first four possessions as they built an early 11-5 lead.  Guastella and Manz would follow with shots from beyond the arc to tie the game at 11 with 15:54 to go in the first half.  Manz was not finished connecting on her next two shots to give the Bobcats the 16-14 lead.

After McQuain made the score 22-21 with a jumper Marist went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-22 lead with 9:46 left. Quinnipiac went on an 8-0 run to even the score with 8:23 left in the half. The Bobcats were sparked by back to back three-pointers from Guastella.

With the score tied at 32 with 7:39 Marist went on a 10-0 run over the next three and a half minutes. The Bobcats and Red Foxes would trade buckets but Marist went into the locker rooms with a 50-38 lead.

Marist shot 57.6 percent (19-for-33) and 63.6 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-11) in the first half while the Bobcats shot 44.1 percent (15-for-34) and 40 percent from three (6-of-15) in the opening stanza. Sydney Coffey had a near perfect half for Marist with 17 points on 5-of-5 shooting and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Coffey also went 4-of-5 from the line. Guastella led the way for the Bobcats in the first half with 11 points and six rebounds while Abshire tallied seven assists.

The Red Foxes started out the second half just as hot as the first half. Casey Dulin connected on her first two jumpers as Marist built their lead to 14. With 12:08 to go Coffey gave the Red Foxes their largest lead of the game, 72-53. Katharine Fogarty would add to the lead for Marist with 10:45 to go, but the Bobcats would not go away.

Over the next 1:34 Quinnipiac went on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 12. McQuain cut the lead to single digits with 3:29 to go, but that would be the closest the Bobcats would get for the rest of the game. Marist would close the game on a 14-4 run and would go on to defeat the Bobcats for the second time this season and improve to 2-1 over the Bobcats in the history of the matchup.

Quinnipiac and Marist both improved their shooting percentages in the second half. The Bobcats shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the second half while the Red Foxes stayed red hot shooting 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the second half.

Quinnipiac returns home to host Monmouth on Sunday, Feb. 16th. Tip-off is scheduled for at 1 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
