Quinnipiac women’s golf head coach John O’Connor has announced the addition of Suzy Whaley as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2013-14 season.
Whaley is most recognized as being the first woman to qualify and participate in a PGA Tour event in close to 60 years when she captured the 2003 Connecticut PGA Section Championship. A three-time Connecticut Open winner, she also captured National LPGA T&CP, CT PGA Section and CPC championships.
An instructor of the game for more than 20 years, she has been honored with the 2003 PGA Connecticut Section Bill Strausbaugh Award, presented to a PGA Professsional who by their day-to-day efforts have distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community. In addition, she was also named the Connecticut Section Teacher of the Year in 2004 and 2007 and the LPGA Northeast Section Teach of the Year in 2008 and 2011. She was honored by Golf Digest Magazine as one of the top instructors in the PGA Connecticut Chapter from 2007 through 2012 and was also named a LPGA Top 50 Instructor over that time period.
In 2012, Whaley was named the sixth recipient of the Nancy Lopez Achievement Award, which was created by the LPGA T&CP in 2007 and given to an LPGA professional who emulates qualities valued by Lopez: Leadership; Passion; Giving; and Approachability.
Whaley has also served, for three terms, as the Sponsor and Marketing Chair, as well as Communications Chair of the PGA Connecticut Section and the PGA National Instruction Committee. She also served as the Chair of the PGA Connecticut Section “Growth of the Game” committee and is currently in her second term on the Connecticut PGA Board of Directors. In 2011-12 she served as the Chair of the National PGA Junior Golf committee and has been on the PGA Board of Directors since 2010.
Whaley graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1989 with a bachelors in economics following a four-year career at UNC. She and her husband Bill, a PGA professional and National Director of Golf for PGA Tour Properties and the General Manager and PGA Director of Golf at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., as well as their daughters Jennifer, a member of Quinnipiac’s women’s golf team, and Kelly currently reside in Farmington, Conn.
