Women's Ice Hockey Ranked Ninth In Preseason Coaches' PollALBANY, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team was selected to finish ninth out of 12 teams in the 2009-10 ECAC Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bobcats garnered 37 points in the poll after posting a 3-26-5 overall record in the 2008-09 season, including a 2-15-5 record in ECAC Hockey. This year's placement is a two-spot improvement from last season's 11th-place prediction.
"It's nice we have earned more respect from the conference coaches this year," said head coach Rick Seeley. "Our team is capable of proving they are worthy of such respect. The team goal for the season, however, is to play above the ninth-place caliber and earn a berth in the playoffs."
St. Lawrence was picked to finish first, receiving 107 points and three first place votes. Harvard was selected to finish second, also receiving three first place votes, while receiving 103 total points. Dartmouth received five first place votes, the most of any team in the conference, but is slotted third with 93 points overall. Princeton sits fourth with 89 points, while Clarkson finished with one first-place vote and 85 points, good for fifth. Rensselaer (74), Cornell (68) and Colgate (52) round out the poll's top eight spots, finishing just ahead of Quinnipiac (37) in ninth. Yale (34), Brown (24) and Union (11) finished behind the Bobcats in 10th, 11th, and 12th, respectively.
The 2009-10 Quinnipiac roster features a balanced combination of 12 returners and 14 newcomers. The Bobcats are returning eight of their top ten scorers from last season, including senior forward Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario), who was named the team's Most Valuable Player after recording nine goals and nine assists as a junior. Other key returnees include senior forward Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) who tallied four goals and eight assists, and Rookie of the Year recipient Chelsea Illchuk (Lockport, Manitoba) who scored five goals and added one assist.
Flor will wear the "C" for Quinnipiac this season after serving as an assistant in 2008-09. Senior forward Evelina Husar (Eskilstuna, Sweden) will serve as the assistant captain for the second-straight season.
The Bobcats open their season Friday, Sept. 25 with an exhibition game against the Bluewater Jr. Hawks at the TD Bank Sports Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
