Women's Ice Hockey Edged By Niagara, 2-1
After a scoreless first period, Niagara jumped on the board at the 6:27 mark of the second period. From behind the net, freshman Kathleen Bortuzzo wrapped around the left side of the net and ripped a shot into the upper right corner for her first goal of the season. Senior Jacqueline Spring was credited with the assist on the play.
The Purple Eagles struck again with less than two minutes to play in the second on freshman Jenna Hendrikx's sixth goal of the year. Senior Jennifer MacLean skated the puck down the right boards into the offensive zone where she crossed the puck in front of the net. Hendrikx tipped a one-timer into the upper right corner for the 2-0 Purple Eagle lead.
The Bobcats cut the lead in half at the 4:50 mark of the third period. Junior Kelley Davies (Chesapeake, Va.) took the faceoff for Quinnipiac in the left circle and snapped the puck back to freshman Breann Julius (Brookings, S.D.) at the left point. Julius fired the puck across the blue line to Vieweg at the right point. Vieweg blasted a shot that soared into the upper left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal and point. The assist was Julius' first career point, while Davies also picked up her first assist of the year on the play.
Quinnipiac held a 20-15 edge in shots over Niagara with sophomore Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) leading all players with four shots on goal. Bobcat goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) recorded 13 saves in the game, while Niagara goaltender Jenni Bauer stopped 19 shots in the win.Quinnipiac returns to action Friday, Oct. 30 when they host Union College in their first ECAC match-up of the season. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
