Victoria Vigilanti Named ECAC Goaltender And Rookie Of The WeekHAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) of the Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week and the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week this afternoon. Vigilanti earns the awards after helping the Bobcats record two wins against Dartmouth and No.-5 ranked Harvard at the TD Bank Sports Center on Friday and Saturday. The rookie netminder turned aside 51 shots in 120 minutes between the pipes on the weekend. This is the third time Vigilanti has been recognized as ECAC Goaltender of the week and it is her first Rookie of the Week honor.
"Victoria was at her best this weekend," said head coach Rick Seeley. "She has been solid for us all year but her confidence and determination seem to peaking. I thought our team played very well in front of her but she still knew she would need to be close to perfect for us to enjoy this kind of success...and she was."
The highlight of the four-point weekend came when Quinnipiac defeated No. 5-ranked Harvard, 1-0, on Saturday for the first time in program history. Vigilanti anchored the Bobcats in the victory, recording 31 saves in her third shutout of the season. The rookie stopped 18 shots by the Crimson in the second period, helping Quinnipiac hold on to their one-goal lead.
Vigilanti turned aside twenty shots on the previous day against Dartmouth, earning her second win against the Big Green this season. Dartmouth opened up the scoring midway through the second period, but the Bobcats came back in the third to score back-to-back goals in the twelfth and fourteenth minute. Vigilanti recorded nine saves in the third period to hold the Quinnipiac lead for the 2-1 win.
More than halfway through the season, Vigilanti continues to rank atop the ECAC goaltending leaderboards. After recording 51 saves this weekend, the freshman moves into first place in the saves category, leading the ECAC with 501 on the year. Vigilanti also ranks third in save percentage (.942) and goals-against average (1.50). With the two weekend wins, the Bobcats move into a second place tie with Princeton, as each team has 17 points in ECAC Hockey action.
Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when they head to Syracuse for a two-game series in upstate New York. The Bobcats and the Orange will face off on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
