Women's Ice Hockey Secures Tournament-Host Position With 8-1 Victory Against Brown
The Bobcats got off to a quick start against the Bears, earning a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the first period. After losing the opening faceoff, Quinnipiac quickly regrouped in the defensive end and freshman Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba) dished the puck to senior Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario) in front of the Bobcats' bench. Duffy skated over the blue line and found line mate Flor positioned just outside the right faceoff circle. Flor took one stride and ripped a shot high into the upper left corner of the net for her 12th goal of the season.
Quinnipiac capitalized on a power play at the 11:10 mark of the first to pull ahead 2-0. Freshman Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) found fellow freshman Heather Hughes (Stouffville, Ontario) at the right goal post, where Hughes lifted the puck over the goaltender's stick for the goal. The goal was Hughes' 13th of the season, and it was Lyons' third assist of the year.
Two more power plays goals in the second period earned the Bobcats a 4-0 lead just seven minutes into the stanza. Sophomore forward Chelsea Illchuk (Lockport, Manitoba) recorded her second goal of the year when she scooped up a loose puck just outside the crease and tucked it under the goaltender's glove for the 3-0 lead. Lyons was credited with her second assist of the game on that play.
Flor recorded her second of the game just over a minute later at the 6:22 mark of the second. From the center point, Boulton dished to Flor just above the right faceoff circle. Flor fired a shot that cleared just above the goaltender's left shoulder for the Bobcats' fourth goal of the game. The assist was Boulton's second of the game and her eighth of the season.
Brown scored their lone goal of the game with 2:34 remaining in the second period. Positioned just outside the right goalpost, freshman center Laurie Jolin received a quick pass from fellow freshman Alexandra Piersiak and snapped it over the stick of Bobcat goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario).
The Bobcats started the third-period scoring at the 1:56 mark of the third period and never looked back. Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) and Hughes notched unassisted tallies just nine seconds apart to open the third. Wheeler earned her fourth of the season when she slapped a loose puck between the pads of the Brown goaltender to make it 5-1. Seconds later, Hughes collected her own rebound in front of the net and tipped a shot over the goaltender for her second of the game and her 14th of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) scored the first goal of her career to put the Bobcats up 7-1 at the 12:59 mark of the third period. On a power-play opportunity, Elkins received the puck at the right point from Wheeler. The sophomore pulled back and blasted a slapshot into the far left corner of the net for the tally. Junior Kelley Davies (Chesapeake, Va.) also recorded an assist on the play.
With 44 seconds left to play in the game, sophomore defenseman Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) sealed the score at 8-1 with her sixth goal of the season. Dymarczyk collected a pass from Lyons just above the slot and fired the puck into the upper left corner for the goal. Senior defenseman Breana Burton (Surrey, British Columbia) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Vigilanti recorded 30 saves in net for the Bobcats, stopping 12 shots by the Bears in the third period. Brown goaltenders Katie Jamieson and Joy Joung split time in net, with Joung stopping ten shots and Jamieson recording 15 saves in the loss.
The Bobcats return to action next weekend when they host the first round of the 2010 ECAC Playoffs. Quinnipiac will host the best of three-game series against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, starting with a 4 p.m. start on Friday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center.
