Official ECAC Hockey Release

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team keeps on rolling as sophomore Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) has been announced the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week by the league office on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The dynamic right winger continued her breakout season with a five-point weekend (two goals, three assists) and was recognized amongst her peers as the conference's most outstanding player of the week for the first time in her career.

Kosta takes home the award after having a hand in every Quinnipiac goal scored over the weekend against conference opponents Colgate and No. 2 nationally-ranked Cornell. She assisted on the first goal of the game, a power-play tally to build a 1-0 Bobcat lead against Colgate on Friday. After the Raiders tied the score, Kosta had the primary assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal from junior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario). It was her fifth game recording at least two assists on the season through nine games.

Kosta wasn't finished as her next matchup was one of the nation's most vaunted teams in No. 2 Cornell. The Big Red had only allowed three goals in their previous three games combined and the Bobcats matched that amount in one period on Saturday. With her team trailing 2-0 after the first, Kosta assisted on a Bobcat goal nine seconds into the second period. She then followed with a pair of goals including one where she deeked out a pair of Cornell defenders and flicked home a backhanded shot to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead over the Big Red. Despite, the team's 4-3 loss to Cornell, Kosta becomes just the second player to notch a multi-goal game against the Big Red all season (Northeastern's Isabel Menard was the other).

She kicked off the weekend as the ECAC Hockey's fourth-leading scorer and the leader in assists among conference-only players and finished up ranked second in the conference in points (20) and tied for first in assists (14) along with her teammate junior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario). After finishing her freshman season with 33 points (eight goals, 25 assists), second on the team, Kosta has already notched 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in just 10 games for Quinnipiac this season (2 points per-game average). Her strong play over the weekend moves her into a tie for seventh place among the national leaderboard in points per-game average and her assist average (1.4 per-game) is tied for fifth-best among all Division I players.

The distinguished Bobcat scorer has been one of the most productive players in the country all season as she leads the team in plus/minus (+16) and has notched a multi-point performance in all but three games out of 10 thus far in the 2012-13 season. Kosta remains one of the team's top facilitators but has picked up her goal-scoring of late with five goals in her past three games (1.83 per-game).

The Bobcats now have a pair of Player of the Week honorees as Kosta joins Babstock who has already earned the award twice this season. After only five weeks the Bobcats have claimed three of the five Player of the Week honors, nearly mirroring the 2010-11 campaign where they claimed the award in the first four consecutive weeks of the season (three different players).
