Emma Woods and Chelsea Laden Claim ECAC Hockey Weekly Awards
ALBANY, N.Y. – After just one week of the regular season, the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team scored a pair of individual honors in the ECAC Hockey's weekly awards announcement, made by the league office on Tues., Oct. 8. Freshman forward Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) picked up the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week while junior goalie Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) earned the Goalie of the Week award. It was the first such award in each of the Bobcats' young careers.
Woods earns Rookie of the Week after scoring the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner, in the final five minutes to help secure the Bobcats' first victory of the season Saturday against St. Cloud State. Woods tied former Bobcat Hayley McMeekin (Oct. 14, 2005) for the fewest games played (two) before registering their first career multi-goal game. Woods combined with sophomore Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) and senior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) as the Bobcats' top offensive line combined for all the points in Saturday's victory. She recorded six shots over the weekend and finished with a plus/minus rating of +3.
Quinnipiac's junior goalie Chelsea Laden was the story for the Bobcats all weekend as she finished with her second career shutout on Friday and a marvelous 27 save outing on Saturday to highlight her 1-0-1 weekend against St. Cloud State. Laden was all over the net on Friday, making several key stops, including one on a breakaway attempt in the first period. The play started with the Huskies' leading scorer last season, Molli Mott, stealing the puck at center ice. The senior forward picked up an errant Bobcat pass at center ice and skated in on Laden. Mott kept the puck on her forehand, bore in with a ton of speed tores the goal but was denied by Laden's blocker on a quick wrist attempt.
That play set the tone for the evening as she post 19 saves in her shutout effort and also took home the shootout victory over the Huskies, 3-2, in seven rounds. In her follow-up performance on Saturday, Laden allowed just one goal in the Bobcats' 3-1 victory. The only Huskie goal came at the 9:01 mark of the first period, with St. Cloud State on the power play. Combined through the weekend, Laden posted 46 saves on 47 shots throughout the two-game non-conference series.
The Bobcats will return to Hamden this weekend for their home opener against Penn State on Friday (7 pm) and Saturday (4 pm) from High Point Solutions Arena. This will be the first ever meeting between both schools.
