ALBANY, N.Y. – A pair of Bobcats in junior goalie Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) and freshman forward Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) were voted as the monthly awards by the ECAC Hockey on Thursday, Oct. 31. Laden picks up the Goaltender of the Month for October while Woods earns the Rookie of the Month distinction after the pair both help lift the Bobcats to their best start in program history.
The backbone to the Bobcats' stingy defensive effort this month has been Laden in net. Ranking third in the nation at just 1.25 goals in scoring defense, the Quinnipiac team defensive has been one of the biggest keys to the team's best start ever (6-1-1) and No. 9 national ranking. Laden's stat line is good enough for the best eight game start to a season for any goaltender in Quinnipiac history.
She continues to lead the nation for the fourth straight week in shutouts (3) and continues to own a Top 10 spot among goalies in the nation in several categories including save percentage (.942, 8th NCAA), goals against average (1.17, 2nd NCAA) and winning percentage (.812, 7th NCAA). Laden reeled off a scoreless streak of 189:09 from Oct. 11 through Oct. 19 (four games) and was unbeatable in the first five games as she allowed just two goals in five games. Her most recent triumph came on Saturday as she and her defense were able to deny Dartmouth on the doorstep several times to come away with a 4-2 victory from Thompson Arena. Laden and the defense staved off a Big Green power play with less than three minutes remaining to shut the door on the Bobcats' crucial victory.
Woods finished up one of the best months for a Quinnipiac freshmen in the history of the program as she picked up two ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week awards (most in the conference) and 10 points (four goals, six assists) after eight games. She's tied for third nationally in points per game average among rookies (1.25) and is tied with three other freshmen for the most goals (four) among all first year skaters in the nation. Her four goals rank first among ECAC Hockey rookies while her six assists also lead all the freshman in the conference.
She burst onto the scene, winning her first ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, after scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State. This marked the start of a five-game point streak, including four points (one goal, three assists) in a two game weekend series at Maine that earned her a second ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. She is tied for the sixth-best plus/minus this month (+7) of any ECAC Hockey skater and has committed just one penalty through eight games in October.
Both Woods and Laden will be back in action this weekend as the No. 9/10 Bobcats take on Colgate and No. 3 Cornell from High Point Solutions Arena.
