No. 5/6 Women's Ice Hockey's Rise up the Rankings Garners Feature on NCAA.com
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 5/6 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team was featured in a recent news brief on the official website of the NCAA. The Bobcats' made some history yesterday as they entered the USCHO.com Top 5 for the first time in program history on Monday.
The sixth consecutive week being ranked in the national polls was especially significant for Quinnipiac (10-1-3, 3-1-2 ECAC Hockey) as they continue their best start in program history. The No. 5 ranking was earned after a monumental home sweep of a pair of Hockey East powers in then-No. 5 ranked Boston College (W, 3-2) and New Hampshire (W, 2-1). It was just the Bobcats' third win ever over a Top 5 program in its school history and the fourth win in 22 chances against the Eagles (4-15-3). The win over the Wildcats on Saturday was Quinnipiac's first ever over New Hampshire in 10 all-time meetings (1-8-1).
One of the keys to the team's success has been their stellar defensive ability as they come into the week with the best scoring defense in the country at 1.07 goals allowed per game. Junior goalie Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) has been a pivotal player in this stretch as she ranks first among NCAA goalies in goals against average (0.95) and shutouts (five) while she is third in save percentage (.951). Senior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) continues to be the main supplier of offense for the Bobcats as she ranks third in the country with 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) and her team is a perfect 10-0 in games in which she has at least one point. Unlike in past years, however, Babstock is receiving plenty of help as 13 different Bobcats have scored a goal this season while 15 skaters have at least two points on the year.
Up next for the No. 5/6 Bobcats will be a home weekend series against perennial ECAC Hockey powers St. Lawrence and No. 8 Clarkson.
