HAMDEN, Conn. – The nationally-ranked No. 10 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team lost to No. 8 Robert Morris, 5-1, in their final non-conference game of the season. Quinnipiac drops to 16-4-6 in 2013-14 while the Colonials pick up their first win ever over the Bobcats and move to 19-3-2 on the season.
Robert Morris junior Rebecca Vint was the star on Tuesday as she got things going for the Colonials with a shorthanded tally just 20 seconds into the frame. Kylie St. Louis jammed the puck forward to the blue line where Vint picked up the loose puck and skated in on Quinnipiac goalie Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) with plenty of speed. Quinnipiac blocked the initial shot but Vint knocked home the rebound in what was also her 100th career point.
Nearly 12 minutes later, Rikki Meilleur knocked in her first goal of the year for Robert Morris as a shot from the slot by Ashley Vesci was initially saved by Laden but the rebound trickled out of her pads and out front to Meilleur who kicked it in to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.
The onslaught continued later in the second period as Vint continued her dominance with a power-play tally at 14:01. Anneline Lauziere passed down to Thea Imbrogno in the slot whose wrist shot went high on Laden. The junior goalie stopped the shot close to her mask but the puck trickled off her pads right out in front for Vint to bang home the open rebound for her second goal of the day.
The fourth and final goal from Robert Morris came off a beautifully executed power play as Brittany Howard passed down to Vint below the near side faceoff circle. She then quickly centered to Lauziere who wristed home the Colonials' second power-play tally of the game and put her team ahead 4-0.
Quinnipiac's lone goal on the afternoon came early in the third period off the stick of senior Shelby Wignall (Hamilton, Ontario). Junior Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) worked her way behind the Robert Morris net and chipped the puck out to the blue line. The Bobcats couldn't recover in time to keep the puck in but sophomore Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontairo) corralled the puck along the boards. She stepped in and fired a shot that was blocked out to Wignall who wristed a shot high, off the pads of a unsuspecting Robert Morris defender and past Colonial goalie Jessica Dodds five-hole.
Robert Morris added an insurance goal late as Imbrogno got loose at the Quinnipiac defensive blue line for a breakaway after a nice end-to-end pass from Vint and finished with the goal to close the scoring at 5-1.
The Bobcats will have a week off before resuming ECAC Hockey action against Dartmouth and Harvard on Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 from the High Point Solutions Arena.
