HAMDEN, Conn. – For the third time this season, Quinnipiac freshman forward Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) picked up the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014. Woods' third Rookie of the Week honor moves her past Nicole Kosta and she now stands behind only Kelly Babstock for the most Rookie weekly distinctions in program history. The No. 8 Bobcats are in the midst of their best season in program history as they currently stand 17-4-7 overall and 8-3-5 in ECAC Hockey play, good enough for 21 points and fourth place in the conference standings.
The ECAC Hockey's second-highest scoring freshman skater scored in back-to-back games this weekend for just the second time in her career and first time since Oct. 12-18 against Penn State and Maine. She landed herself on the score sheet late in the second period with 43 seconds remaining against Dartmouth for her first tally since Dec. 7 against Rensselaer (five games). Her last-minute goal started a string of three unanswered for the Bobcats after falling behind 1-0 early to the Big Green to pick up a crucial 3-1 victory in conference play.
Woods wasn't finished for the weekend as she picked another late second period goal in the Bobcats' Saturday matchup against No. 3/5 Harvard. She beat her defender up-ice and deflecting a centering pass past the legs of Emerance Maschmeyer in what turned out to be another crucial goal as the Bobcats ultimately tied the Crimson, 2-2, on Saturday. With 20 points this season, Woods has already vaulted herself into the Top 10 list in program history for points in a player's freshman season
The No. 8 Bobcats and Woods will be back in action for an impactful road weekend series as they travel to No. 3 Clarkson, who are in the midst of a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1), and St. Lawrence who currently stand just two points behind Quinnipiac in the ECAC Hockey standings.
