Harvard Defeats Women's Lacrosse, 15-10
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team fell to Harvard, 15-10, at Cumnock Turf for its first loss of the season. Senior Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.) scored three goals in the game, bringing her season total to seven in two games. The loss evens the Bobcats' mark at 1-1 this season, while the Crimson improve to 2-1 with the win.
"Although we didn't execute as well as we had hoped," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "I was proud of the effort we put forth. We were competitive to the last whistle and we got contributions from a lot of our younger players, so there were definitely some positives to come out of the game."
Harvard jumped out to an early 7-1 lead midway through the first half. The Crimson's Sara Flood and Jess Halpern combined to score five of the Harvard goals during that stretch that saw Quinnipiac's Fiore record the team's lone tally in the first 18 minutes of play. Sophomore Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored the final two goals of the half on free-position shots to pull the Bobcats to within four, 7-3.
The second half began much like the first as the Crimson scored the opening three goals. Fiore's sixth goal of the season came on another free position at 23:51. Freshman Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored her first of the game on a feed from Gibney for the fifth Quinnipiac goal. Fiore's final goal of the game came on a pass from junior defender Brittany Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to four, 10-6, with 16:09 remaining.
Quinnipiac was unable to mount any sustained pressure as Harvard outscored the Bobcats 5-4 in the final 15:39 of action. Caroleo scored her second goal of the game with just over 10 and a half minutes left, while sophomore Jennifer Skipper (Centerport, N.Y.) scored her first of the season on a free-position shot.
Senior co-captain Tiffany Manzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) netted the final two goals of the game for the Bobcats. The tallies were her second and third of the season. On the final Quinnipiac goal, Manzi fired a shot past Harvard's Kerry Clark on a pass from junior Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) at the top corner of the goal crease.
For the second game in a row, the Bobcats split goalkeeper duties between junior Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.). Nelson started the game, stopping seven shots in the first 30 minutes of play, while Martello made six saves in the second half. Clark made three saves in each half in picking up the win for Harvard.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 10, when it takes on Central Connecticut in New Britain, Conn., in its first Northeast Conference matchup of the season. The Bobcats and Blue Devils are set to start at 3 p.m.
