NEW BRITAIN, Conn. Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) set career highs in goals, assists and points as the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team defeated Central Connecticut, 15-7, in the team's Northeast Conference opener. The sophomore attacker scored two goals and dished out three assists for five points in the game. The Bobcats improve 2-1 this season and are now 1-0 in league play with the win. The loss drops the Blue Devils' mark to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the NEC.
Senior Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.) scored four goals in the game for the second time in three games this season. She also added an assist for five points in the game. She now has a team-leading 11 goals this year, while fellow senior Tiffany Manzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) scored a season-high three goals on seven shots in the game, while collecting a game-high four ground balls.
"It's always good to get an NEC win, especially when it comes over an in-state rival," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "We played a tough team today, and we got everyone into the game. That experience gave us a good look at what this team is made up of going forward this season."
Quinnipiac marched out to an early lead, taking an eight-goal advantage, 9-1, into halftime. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) started the game for the Bobcats and made four saves on five shots in the first 30 minutes of play. Stephanie John scored the lone goal of the half for the Blue Devils. Fiore tallied three of her four goals in the first half, while Kelly Bruneau (Cheshire, Conn.) and Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each netted their first goals of the season as the Bobcats ended the half on a 6-0 run.
After Central Connecticut's Cara Momnie scored the opening two goals of the second half, Quinnipiac's Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) and Jennifer Skipper (Centerport, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals 15 seconds apart nine minutes into period. Fiore added her final goal just under two minutes later at 19:39.
Sophomore Keiley Indivero (Cicero, N.Y.) scored her first two goals of the season in the second half. Her first goal beat CCSU's goalkeeper Alice Lee and gave the Bobcats a 13-5. Senior Meghan Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) collected her first assist of the season on the goal. Indivero scored her second just under three minutes later on a free-position shot. Manzi closed out the scoring for Quinnipiac on a free-position shot with 6:20 remaining in the game that gave the Bobcats a 10-goal lead, 15-5.
After playing the first half, Nelson gave way in goal to freshman Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.). Martello turned away 12 shots in the final half of action. Nelson was credited with her first win of the season, while Lee picked up the loss despite making 16 saves in the game.
The Bobcats outshot the Blue Devils, 37-27, in the game, including 24-8 in the first half. The Bobcats also collected a season-high 27 ground balls in the game and caused 16 of CCSU's 25 turnovers. Manzi, Skipper and senior defender Erin Coffey (Huntington, N.Y.) each had three caused turnovers in the win for Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Mar. 13 as they take on Iona in a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. from New Rochelle, N.Y.
