Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Long Island, 22-10

HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored six goals and added one assist as the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team defeated Long Island, 22-10, at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. Senior Ashley Valentine (Friendship, Md.) tied a career high as she scored five goals helping the Bobcats improve to 2-1 in Northeast Conference play and 5-2 overall this season. The loss drops the Blackbirds' mark to 1-3 in league play and 2-7 overall.

Five members of the Bobcats recorded five or more points in the game. Seniors Tiffany Manzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.) each finished with five as Manzi had three goals and two assists, while Fiore posted two goals and three assists. Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) posted a season-best four assists, while adding a goal. Caroleo led the way with seven and Valentine had five in the win.

"I was really pleased to see some different people step up," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "Marissa (Caroleo) and Katie (Latonick) had big games for our team. We knew what Ashley (Valentine) and Tiffany (Manzi) were capable of producing, but it's nice to see others step up and help us earn a good team win."

The Bobcats scored three quick goals in the first four minutes of the game. Long Island answered back with two goals from Christie Weinckowski to pull to within one, 3-2. The Bobcats followed with a 9-0 run, including three goals from Caroleo and two from Manzi. Weinckowski scored with 26 seconds remaining in the first to make it a nine-goal lead for Quinnipiac at halftime, 12-3.

Long Island began the second half on a 5-1 run. The Bobcats' lone goal in that span came from sophomore Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) for her first of the season. After freshman Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied the team's 14th goal of the game, Valentine scored three-straight goals in a two-minute span.

Junior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted her fourth of the season with 4:22 remaining before Valentine's fifth goal of the game and 16th of the season closed out the scoring for the Bobcats, sealing the 12-goal victory, 22-10.

Quinnipiac's Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) earned her second win of the year in goal for the Bobcats as she made four saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.) in the second. Martello also turned aside four shots, while the Blackbirds' goalkeeper Jaqueline Simonian stopped 11 shots in the loss

Caroleo now ranks third on the team in goals with 13 this season, while fourth in points with 15. Manzi's three goals give her 12 this season, while third on the team with 16 points. The five points from Fiore give her a team-best 28, nine more than second-place Valentine.

Manzi added six ground balls and eight draw controls in the win. Banach finished the game with a goal and an assist, while also picking up three ground balls and two draw controls. Valentine and Meghan Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) both had multiple draw controls for the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, April 3, as it hosts Bryant. The Bobcats and Bulldogs are set to play at 4:00 p.m.
