Women's Lacrosse Takes On Brown Sunday In Providence
Quinnipiac University Bobcats (0-1) at
Brown University Bears (1-1)
Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 1 p.m.
Stevenson Field - Providence, R.I.
Sunday's Game
The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team travels to
Providence, R.I., to take on the Brown University Bears Sunday
afternoon at Stevenson Field at 1 p.m. The Bobcats are coming off a
16-8 loss in their season opener Wednesday at UConn. Junior Lauren
Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led Quinnipiac with three goals
and four points in the first game of the season.
Scouting the Bears
Brown enters the game having split its first two contests,
posting a 1-1 record. The one win was in its season opener against
Northeast Conference opponent and Quinnipiac rival Sacred Heart,
14-6, on Feb. 27 in Providence. The Bears then went on the road to
take on Boston University, losing, 9-5, on Mar. 3. Bethany Buzzell
and Paris Waterman each lead the team with identical scoring lines
of four goals and one assist for five points. Isabel Harvey has
played all 120 minutes in goal for the Bears, posting a
goals-against average of 7.50 with a save percentage of .464. The
Bobcats defeated the Bears, 11-6, last season on April 14.
Good
Start
After scoring just four goals all of last season,
Matuszczak scored three goals in the opening game of the 2010
season. The third-year Bobcat scored the first and last goals of
the first half before netting her third with 5:32 remaining in the
game. She also assisted on another to match her career high of four
points.
Leader of the Pack
Captain Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) scored two
goals in a game Wednesday against the Huskies for the first time
since last season on April 5 in a 19-5 win over Mount St. Mary's.
Scoring just nine goals last year, Latonick is on pace for 28 in
2010. She also has at least one point in 11 straight games dating
back to last season.
Season Opening Sophomore
Sophomore Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) started the 2010
campaign right where she left off in 2009: scoring goals. Gibney
found the back of the net twice against the Huskies, including
completing Quinnipiac's only free-position shot of the game in the
first half.
Jolly Good Show
Senior defender Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) had
a team-high three ground balls on Wednesday. That figure matched
her career high set twice before her latest three ground-ball
performance.
Doing the Little Things
Last season's NEC Rookie of the Year Marissa Caroleo
(North Babylon, N.Y.) may not have found the score sheet with a
goal or an assist, but she led the Bobcats with four draw controls
against UConn. She also was the only other player besides Kelly to
record multiple ground balls in the game, picking up two.
One-And-One
Junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) scored once
and assisted on another goal in the first game of the year.
Quinnipiac's Most Improved Player of 2009 potted her first tally of
the season 7:14 into the game to give her team the early 2-1 lead.
She followed with an assist on the last Bobcats' goal of the half,
making a quick pass to Matuszczak to set up the team's fourth
tally.
