Women's Lacrosse Reads To Local School Children

HAMDEN, Conn. - On Feb. 22, several members of the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team traveled to Erica LaFrance's first grade class at Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS) in Hamden to read to her students. Head coach Danie Caro's son Tyler is a first grader at the school, and he invited the members of the Bobcats to teach his classmates about lacrosse and read stories in honor of his seventh birthday.

"I think it's really important for our student-athletes to be active in the community and make contributions beyond the playing fields and the classroom," Caro said. "It makes them appreciate what they have, and it also teaches them how powerful it can be to make a difference in other people's lives."

Senior Brittany Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) helped Caro coordinate the outing as part of the Athletic Department's Positive Play program. In addition to Hauser, seniors Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.), juniors Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield, Conn.), Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and Kelley McDonough (Mahopac, N.Y.), sophomore Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.), and freshman Emily Mason (Fairfield, Conn.) all made the trip and spent time showing the students their lacrosse equipment and reading books.

"Reading to the students and teaching them about lacrosse was a lot of fun and very rewarding." Hauser said. "It is nice to be able to give back to the community that has done so much for us. Mrs. LaFrance's class made us feel really welcome and we enjoyed spending time interacting with them."

The women's lacrosse team was the 2008-09 Positive Play Cup Champions, an award given annually to the Quinnipiac athletic team that shows the most community involvement during the academic year.

The Bobcats return to action on Thursday, Mar. 11 against the Fairfield Stags. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 26, but was moved due to inclement weather. The 3 p.m. start time of the team's home opener will take place at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field.
