Devon Gibney Named NEC Women's Lacrosse Player Of The Week

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac women's lacrosse junior midfielder Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday, Mar. 28.

"Devon had a great weekend for us," head coach Danie Caro said. "She put points on the board, but more importantly, she was a big part of our transition game and was very solid on defense. Devon has the potential to play like this on a regular basis and I think she is beginning to realize that."

Gibney experienced one of the best weeks of her career, as she collected 11 points combined, on nine goals and two assists, in both weekend games against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Robert Morris. The junior also collected five draw controls, two caused turnovers and one ground ball overall. On Friday, Mar. 25 in a 17-10 win over Saint Francis (Pa.), Gibney tied for the team-lead with five overall points (three goals, two assists) while also sharing the team-lead in draw controls, with three. On Sunday, Mar. 27 against Robert Morris, Gibney matched her career-high with six goals scored in a 14-11 victory. Gibney was also very active on the defensive front, as she collected one ground ball, caused one turnover and corralled two draw controls.

The Hopkinton native ranks third on the team in overall points with 21 (15 goals, six assists), first in draw controls (21), and is tied for first in ground balls (seven). Gibney ranks seventh overall in NEC action with 3.00 points per game and is tied for second with a 3.00 draw controls per game average. The Player of the Week selection marks the second time in Gibney's career in which she has received the award. Gibney last earned NEC Player of the Week honors on March 15, 2010.
