HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's lacrosse freshman attacker Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) has been named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday, March 19. This marks Ochwat's second-career Rookie of the Week selection, as she was previously honored by the league earlier this season on Monday, Feb. 27.
"Kyra is off to a great start for us," said head coach Danie Caro. "Not only is she chipping in points for us, but she's doing all the little things we need her to do. She's been a key factor in our transition game and she has more poise than you'd expect from a freshman."
Ochwat continued her impressive run to begin her Quinnipiac career, collecting her second Rookie of the Week honors of the season following a six point (five goals, one assist) week in three games played. The freshman's best game of the week came on Sunday, March 18 against Brown, in which she recorded her second-career hat trick (and picked up her first-career assist) during the team's 20-15 loss.
Earlier in the week, Ochwat netted a go-ahead goal late in the first half against St. Mary's (Calif.) on March 12 during the team's 18-14 victory. She then scored a goal against Denver on March 15 during the team's 19-6 defeat.
"We're excited to keep working with Kyra as she continues to develop," continued Caro. "I think she has tremendous potential and will be a key player for us for years to come."
Ochwat is currently tied for fourth on the team in total points (nine) and is first among all Bobcats freshman in both goals and points. Her mark of 2.00 goals per game is tied for ninth among all NEC players.
Ochwat and the Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 21 when they host Vermont at 2 p.m. at Quinnipiac Lacrosse Turf Field.
