HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fell to the University of Connecticut, 20-6, in a non-conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 0-2 on the young season while their Big East opponent improves to 3-0.
"We were disappointed in our performance today," said head coach Danie Caro. "Unfortunately our intensity level and hustle was very inconsistent, and that affected our level of execution. UConn played extremely well, and we never got in a very good flow on either end of the field."
Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led Quinnipiac with two goals and an assist while Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) added two assists in the loss. Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a goal and an assist while Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.), Maria Blois (Cheshire, Conn.) and Kayla Fu (Severna Park, Md.) also scored for the Bobcats. For UConn, Katherine Finkelston and Kacey Pippitt scored four goals apiece while Chelsea Hauswirth had two goals and three assists. Karaline Smith added two goals while Catherin Gross had a goal and two assists.
"Our attack was undisciplined today," said Caro. "We didn't execute our game plan and we weren't in sync as a unit. I think a lot of our players got frustrated with the physicality of the game and let it affect their play."
Guerrerra scored on a free position shot at the 27:03 mark for her first goal of the season to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. After UConn scored twice to take a 2-1 lead, Ochwat scored to tie the game with 25:37 to play. Five different Huskies found the back of the net as UConn rattled off five unanswered goals before Quinnipiac's Tinsley scored to break UConn's run. After a pair of UConn goals, Blois with just under eight minutes to play in the first half before the Huskies scored three more times in the first half to take a 12-4 lead heading into intermission.
Coming out of the half, Pippitt scored twice to give UConn a 10-goal lead, 14-4, before Ochwat scored her second goal of the game as well as her team-leading seventh of the season. UConn's Smith and Quinnipiac's Fu traded goals as the Bobcats pulled within nine goals before UConn rattled off six more in the final 14 minutes of play. The goal registered as Fu's first career goal while in Bobcat uniform.
"Our defense and goalkeepers are struggling right now, and we will continue to work on this," said Caro. "We need to do a better job communicating and playing as a unit. We had a few good plays today, but we weren't able to sustain any type of momentum."
Despite the loss freshman goalkeeper Rachel Massicotte (Wayland, Mass.) picked up seven saves in the afternoon with four coming out of the second stanza. Sophomore Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, N.Y.) also made two saves.
"We have to re-group before Wednesday. Iona is a tough team, so we'll need to be prepared and bring our A game," said Caro. "If we can play with some consistency and work out some of our problems in the next few days, we should see a better effort."
Quinnipiac's next five games will be on the road as they travel to Iona (3/6), Vermont (3/9), Fairfield (3/12), Brown (3/15) and Hofstra (3/17). The Bobcats will return home to begin the regular season as they host Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart on Friday, Mar. 22 at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the month on the road at Bryant (3/28) and Central Connecticut State (3/3).
