Quinnipiac Women's Lacrosse: Together, We Can Stick It to Cancer
"Together, We Can Stick It to Cancer" By Keira Flaherty '15
HAMDEN, Conn. - Each and every member of the Quinnipiac University Women's Lacrosse team has been affected by cancer in some way. On Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m. against Long Island University and on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. against Wagner University, the women's lacrosse team will be fighting back against cancer. The Bobcats have organized a "Stick it to Cancer Weekend" and each player will be dedicating their play this weekend to a special person that has been affected by cancer.
The Bobcats are hosting the event as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program. The team sold donation cards during February playoff games at the TD Bank Sports Center, and those will be displayed at the lacrosse field this weekend. Additionally, the Bobcats are collecting online donations in advance of the event and will also be collecting donations in a special collection jar during the game. All donations will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
"The entire team is really excited about this weekend. Each and every one of us has been affected by this awful disease, and I think there is no better way to show those around us that we care," said Michaela Tinsley, one of the players who helped organize the event. "This weekend, we are not only playing for our teammates and coaches, but we are playing for someone special in our lives. Doing that is going to make us play that much harder."
Along with Tinsley, sophomore Kyra Ochwat, juniors Kayla Fu and Kearney Sneath, and senior Chelsea Guerrera have been instrumental in planning the event. "I am really proud of the players that have taken on leadership roles in coordinating this event," said head coach Danie Caro. "All of our student-athletes work really hard to achieve in the classroom and on the playing field, and the fact that they can also find time to fight this important battle is inspiring. I think it speaks to their character, and says a lot about the type of people they are and what they value."
This awareness and fundraising campaign has become personal for assistant coach Brittany Hauser, whose mother, Melinda Hauser, is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. According to Hauser, "Everyone knows that cancer is an awful disease. But until it affects someone you are really close to, you don't always realize how important the fight to raise awareness and funding can be. The American Cancer Society is a leader in that battle, and I'm grateful for the work they are doing, and incredibly pleased that we are able to help in the fight against Cancer."
Approximately 1.6 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and over 13 million Americans are currently living with a history of cancer. Please support the Women's Lacrosse team and the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer as we help to create a world with more birthdays.
