WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Quinnipiac women's lacrosse senior Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) netted three goals for the third straight game on Friday afternoon, but it was the Monmouth Hawks who came away with an 11-7 victory at Kessler Field to remain unbeaten in Northeast Conference play. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 3-3 in NEC action.
Quinnipiac was led by Toomey who garnered multiple points for the fifth straight game, which includes at least four points in her last three outings. Toomey added an assist to her hat trick and picked up two draw controls for the Bobcats. Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on another while Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) tallied two goals to conclude the Bobcats' scoring summary.
Monmouth jumped out to an early lead behind Erica Abendschoen's seventh goal of the season, but Quinnipiac needed just 17 seconds to find the equalizer. Allen scored the first and fourth goals of a 4-0 Bobcat run which propelled Quinnipiac in front by a score of 4-1. Ochwat and Toomey netted the middle goals of the rally, as Quinnipiac seemed to grasp control of the first half.
However, just 30 seconds after Allen's second tally of the game, Monmouth scattered three goals over the next four minutes to tie the score up at four apiece. Toomey stopped the bleeding with 2:12 remaining in the first half, and Quinnipiac escaped with a mere one-goal lead at the break, 5-4.
After the intermission, the Hawks' offense clicked on all cylinders to seize control of the game. Monmouth scored seven of the game's next eight goals, including a run of five straight to expunge a 6-6 deadlock. Ochwat pulled the Bobcats to within four at the 3:52 mark, but Monmouth held off a late push for their eighth win of the season.
The box score reveals two very evenly match teams, as Monmouth edged Quinnipiac in shots (23-20) and groundballs (18-12), with each team collecting 10 draw controls. The Bobcats did turn the ball over five more times (16-11) than the Hawks.
Defensively, Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, N.Y.) made seven saves for the Bobcats, while her counterpart Katie Donohoe stopped eight in the triumph. QU's Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.), Phoebe Laplante (New Bedford, Mass.) and Emily Samuelman (North Andover, Mass.) each scooped up two groundballs apiece.
Monmouth, now 8-6 overall, was led by Sam Savona who netted four goals on six shot attempts. Kaleigh Gibbons also chipped in a four-point outing with three goals and an assist.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, April 14 at Mount St. Mary's. Game time is set for 12 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Md.
