HAMDEN, Conn.- Senior Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, NY) collected the 100th goal of her career on Sunday afternoon as the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team defeated the Saint Francis University Red Flash, 20-8, on Senior Day. Despite the win, the Bobcats playoff chances were dashed as Bryant earned the No. 3 seed with a win over Mount St. Mary's who landed the No. 4 and final playoff spot. The Bobcats finish the 2013 season at 7-9 with a 5-4 mark in NEC action. The loss for the Red Flash drops them to 4-13 overall and 1-8 against NEC opponents.
"Today's game was one of our best team efforts," said head coach Danie Caro. "Our offense did a good job moving the ball, and finding the open player. And our defense was able to play as a unit and limit Saint Francis University's scoring opportunities."
Junior Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led the offensive unit in scoring with four goals and two assists on the afternoon. Senior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) joined Tinsley providing multiple goals for the Bobcats as she led the team with seven points (three goals, four assists). Sophomore Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Keira Flaherty (Braintree, Mass.) matched Toomey's two goals respectively, while Ochwat dished out four assists. Seven other Bobcats contributed a goal against the Red Flash, including first career goals from senior Kiera Carey (Long Beach, N.Y.), sophomore Briana Fountain (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Leah Walter (Londonderry, N.H.)
"I was pleased that our seniors had the chance to go out on a winning note," said Caro. "They've contributed a great deal to the program and will be missed. It was nice to see some of our younger players log some quality minutes and make plays at both ends of the field."
From the opening whistle the Bobcats controlled the field as Toomey would give the Bobcats their first goal of the game before Saint Francis University would answer back quickly to give the Red Flash their only tie score of the game, 1-1. Quinnipiac would then control the remainder of the half as Toomey collected her 100th career goal off of a feed from Ochwat. The Bobcats offense wouldn't let up as Tinsley would bury back -to-back goals before the Saint Francis University defense could recover.
Ochwat would then extend the Quinnipiac lead to 5-1 before the Red Flash could get on the boards again. The Bobcats quickly put together an 8-0 run just after the 10:00 mark in the first half as eight different scorers were able to find the back of the net. The following possession, Saint Francis freshman Lindsay Ingram would connect off a pass from the top of the key from classmate, Christina Fini to continue the Red Flash's attempt to stay in the game. However, the Bobcats would reel off four more goals before the half's end to give Quinnipiac the, 17-3, advantage into intermission.
Opening the second stanza Quinnipiac remained on top connecting offensively and shutting down on the Red Flash offensive force. Quinnipiac would connect on consecutive goals from Flaherty and Walter. The Red Flash would then try to make their comeback in the second half as they strung together four goals to stop the bleeding at 18-7. However that wasn't enough as each team knocked back a pair of goals in the final seconds remaining to give the Bobcats the convincing 20-8 victory.
Freshman Ingram led Saint Francis University with three goals and two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, N.Y.) made six saves between the posts for the Bobcats. While her opponent Savannah Shores turned aside five shots for the Red Flash.
Draw controls heavily favored the Bobcats down the stretch as they owned a 22-8 lead overall and held Saint Francis University to just 16 shots overall. For the game, the Bobcats outshot the Red Flash 31-16, and collected the edge in groundballs, 13-6. With the win, Quinnipiac will continue their perfect 12-0 run against Saint Francis.
