Michaela Tinsley Named Women’s Lacrosse Captain for 2013-14 Season
HAMDEN, Conn. - Attacker Michaela Tinsley has been announced as the Bobcats' captain for the 2013-14 season by head coach Danie Caro. Phoebe Laplante and Vicki Kuhn will serve as assistant captains for next year.
"My staff is very excited to see Mickey, Phoebe, and Vicki work together to lead the team next year," Caro said. "They have different leadership styles and traits that we expect will be very complementary. Each of these young women have been model student-athletes and they are respected by their peers."
Tinsley is coming off her best season in a Bobcat uniform, totaling 41 points in 2013 on the strength of 36 goals and five assists. The junior now has amassed 76 points in her career (62 goals, 14 assists) to go along with 26 ground balls, 14 caused turnovers, and seven draw controls.
"Mickey really demonstrated great leadership qualities on and off the field this year, while also maturing as a player. She has worked hard to become more vocal as a leader, and we have no doubt she will be effective as a captain next year," Caro said.
Laplante developed into a regular starter during her junior season after moving to a more defensive-focused role. She finished second on the team in draw controls this past spring (43), and has now collected 53 in her career. Laplante also contributed 12 points (6 goals and 6 assists), 23 ground balls, and 12 caused turnovers in 2013.
According to Caro, "Phoebe really made significant strides this year. She has remarkable passion and drive and worked really hard to become the type of player the team needed her to be. She is a strong leader by example and a great role-model for our younger players."
Kuhn was named a second team All-Northeast Conference selection in 2013 after developing into one of the conference's leading shut-down defenders. She was also named the team's Outstanding Defensive Player after posting three points, 19 ground balls, five caused turnovers, and five draw controls this spring.
"Vicki is an intense competitor and has been a key part of our defense the past two seasons. She has grown into her role, and is very comfortable stepping up when she needs to," said Caro.
The Bobcats will be moving to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 2013-14, and Caro anticipates that team leadership will be critical in easing the transition to the new conference. "We're going to be in unfamiliar waters in terms of conference opponents next spring. It will be really critical for our captains, and all of the upperclassmen, to set the tone early on so that we can be successful in the MAAC," Caro said. "I believe that Mickey, Phoebe, and Vicki are committed to providing strong leadership for the team next year, and they will do whatever it takes to ensure we are prepared for whatever challenges the season brings."
