Women's Lacrosse Falls To UConn In Season Opener, 17-7
STORRS, Conn. – Five Bobcats registered points on Saturday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team was defeated by in-state rival UConn, 17-7, in its season-opener at George J Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. Sophomore Aileen Carey (Long Beach, N.Y.) tallied a career high four points and scored her first career hat trick for Quinnipiac.
Senior Phoebe Laplante (New Bedford, Mass.) had two assists for Quinnipiac. While Shana Maglio (Garden City, N.Y.), Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Kayla Fu (Severna Park, Md.), and Kearney Sneath (Branford, Conn.) chipped in with a goal each.
"We didn't play a very smart game today, and our mental error killed us. Connecticut is very talented and played well, and we didn't respond to the challenge," stated Head Coach Danie Caro.
UConn would continue the scoring in the first three minutes of the second half as they built a double digit lead. Carey would score two goals in the second half, but it would not be enough for the Bobcats.
"Aileen played really well at both ends of the field. She was one of our most consistent players and really stepped up today," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "The only bright spot is that we played hard for 60 minutes. Even though our execution was inconsistent, our effort was not, and that's something to build upon."
UConn held a 17-8 draw control advantage and a 16-15 ground ball advantage. The major advantages the Huskies held were a 32-16 shots advantage and a 24-14 shots on goal advantage.
"We made a few really good plays, but unfortunately not enough of them to make a difference. I think we saw some encouraging things that we can build on and if we can make the adjustments we need to, we'll be in good shape," said Head Coach Danie Caro.
