Women's Lacrosse Visits Helen Street School On Tuesday, March 4th

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University Women's Lacrosse team visited the kindergarten classes at Helen Street School on Tuesday to complete a Dr. Seuss themed reading and craft project. Former Bobcat Lexi DeStefano '11 teaches at Helen Street and worked with the team to coordinate the visit.

"Visiting Helen Street is always a meaningful endeavor for my team," said head coach Danie Caro. "We have developed an ongoing relationship with the school due to having two lacrosse alumna teaching there, and it's really great to see how successful they are in their teaching positions." In addition to DeStefano, 2011 graduate Laura Iannotti teaches third grade at Helen Street School.

"We always love coming to Helen Street and reading to the kids. It always makes their day to have visitors, and it also makes ours to see them so happy," said junior Briana Fountain.

Members of the team worked with the students in small groups to create a "Cat in the Hat" inspired treat using oreos, icing, and gummies. After creating their snacks, the lacrosse players read several Dr. Seuss books to the students. The Bobcats also shared information with the classes about their sport and the equipment they use to play lacrosse.

According to senior Phoebe Laplante, "It is always great to visit Helen Street School and be able to interact with the children of this community. Today was filled with smiles and laughter as we were able to read some of our very own favorite Dr. Seuss books to the kindergarten class.  Unfortunately we didn't make green eggs and ham in the classroom, but we did get to help the children make delicious 'Cat in the Hat' treats."

DeStefano is in her first year as a full-time kindergarten teacher at Helen Street School, and both she and Ianotti earned the MAT degree from Quinnipiac in 2012. "We really appreciate the willingness of the lacrosse team to visit with our students," DeStefano said. "Many of them attend various Quinnipiac games and think it's really cool to get to meet the student-athletes in person. The team is great with our students and I'm proud to see my former teammates so involved in community service activities."

The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, March 7, when they travel to Yale for a 4 pm non-conference matchup.
