HAMDEN, Conn – The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team was dealt a 13-7 loss by Hofstra in its 2014 home opener at the Quinnipiac Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 0-4 on the season while Hofstra improves to 5-2.
"I was a little disappointed with our effort and intensity today," head coach Danie Caro said "We came out flat to start the first half and then made the same mistake at the start of the second half. You can't expect to compete if you don't start playing from the very first whistle."
Quinnipiac senior Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Alexandra Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.) both scored twice while Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored her first career goal while freshman Devin Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) also scored for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac fell behind early as Hofstra scored five unanswered goals with the first three coming in the first 45 seconds of the game. Brittain Altimore led the Pride with four goals and five assists in the game, with a hand in Hofstra's first seven goals. It wasn't until Kelly converted on a free-position shot at the 13:59 mark that Quinnipiac was on the board. The Bobcats managed to outscore Hofstra 4-2 in the final 14 minutes of the half to head into the break trailing 7-4.
"I thought our settled defense was good for most of the first half, but we struggled in transition defense." Caro said.
Coming out of the break, it was more of the same as Hofstra ripped off a five goal run to jump out to a 12-4 lead, with Altimore and April Iannetta both scoring twice in the run.
Quinnipiac showed poise heading down the stretch, outscoring Hofstra 3-1 over the final 4:18 to play, highlighted by a pair of markers from Tinsley and Ochwat's team-leading seventh goal of the year.
"We've got a lot to work on before we play Vermont. Hopefully we can re-focus and get everyone on the same page so we can compete," Caro said.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 12 when it hosts Vermont at the Quinnipiac Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn.
