FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-7 setback to their in-state conference rival the Fairfield Stags at Lessing Field in Fairfield, Conn. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 2-4 in conference play while Fairfield improves to 5-0 in MAAC play.
Junior Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, NY) once again led the offensive attack for Quinnipiac as she tallied her seventh hat trick of the season and the 19th of her career. The hat trick was her third in as many games. Ochwat has scored a hat trick in five of her last seven games.
Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.), Alexandra Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.), Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and Devin Kelly (Miller Place, NY) each chipped in with a goal for the Bobcats. Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) added an assist for Quinnipiac. Babstock has registered at least a point in every game she has played in a women's lacrosse uniform.
The game opened with both Fairfield and Quinnipiac having high quality chances stopped by the defense. Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, NY) made back to back saves after Fairfield won the opening draw. After a successful clear Quinnipiac was able to put three shots on net, but were unable to connect.
The Stags were able to score the game's first goal with 22:34 left when the second leading goal scorer in the MAAC, Melanie Raso, scored her 36th goal of the season. Raso was able to score her 37th just 26 seconds later.
Ochwat cut the lead in half with 34th goal of the year with 20:02 left in the first. Tinsley tied the score at two with 12:56 left in the half off the Babstock assist. Fairfield closed the half on a 4-2 run and took a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.
In the first half, Fairfield held advantages in ground balls (10-9) and draw controls (9-2). Quinnipiac went 9-for-12 on first half clears while Fairfield went 7-for-7.
Raso scored her third of the game for Fairfield in just over a minute into the second half. Ochwat was able to cut the Fairfield lead back to three a minute later, but the Stags scored five unanswered goals making the score 12-5. Ochwat added her third of the game with 19:44 left, but the Stags closed the game on a 6-1 run and took the 18-7 victory.
In the second half, Fairfield held an 11-7 ground balls advantage and a 9-7 draw controls advantage. In the second half Quinnipiac was 2-for-4 on clears while Fairfield was 7-of-9.
Tilts made seven saves for Quinnipiac in 37 minutes of action while sophomore Rachel Massicotte (Wayland, Mass.) made two saves in 23 minutes in net for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac will return to action on Saturday, April 19 at 1 PM when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on the Siena Saints.
