The Quinnipiac women’s rugby team kicks off its inaugural season with a road contest against Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m.
Quinnipiac had a successful inaugural spring season in 2011, hosting its first-ever women’s rugby contest on Saturday, April 2 against Central Connecticut. Despite not competing in the 2010 season, Quinnipiac placed four players on the MetNY U-23 All-Star Team, including junior Katie Wood (Hamilton, N.J.), sophomore Megan Hannemann (Manchester, N.H.), freshman Jacqueline MacLearie (Tinton Falls, N.J.), and freshman Diana Poulsen (Dover, N.J).
The Bobcats are the most recent members to join the Metropolitan New York Rugby Football Union, which is the governing body for over 80 men’s and women’s youth, high school and college clubs in the Metropolitan New York City region. Quinnipiac will play in the MetNY College Women’s Division II Conference, which is the home to Marist, Vassar, Rutgers, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Stony Brook, and Hofstra.
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2010 season ranked 8th in the nation, finishing the season with a 2-2-1 record. Rutgers allowed only 58 points against, which was second best in the MetNY Conference. Rutgers has had a history of success with its women’s rugby program, as the squad went undefeated in 2009 en-route to a MetNY Division II Championship.
Following Sunday’s contest against Rutgers, Quinnipiac travels to face Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. The Bobcats will then play SUNY New Paltz on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
Quinnipiac will host its first home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 2 against Marist at 12 p.m. The Bobcats will then host Vassar on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 16, with both games scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
The Bobcats travel to face Hofstra on Wednesday, Oct. 19 scheduled for a 12 p.m. start, followed by a home contest on Sunday, Oct. 23 against SUNY Stony Brook at 12 p.m. Quinnipiac finishes its season with two away games, the first against Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. and the second against West Chester on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m.
