NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Quinnipiac women’s rugby team lost to Rutgers in its first-ever regular season contest, 51-0, on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Bobcats begin the season with an 0-1 record, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 1-0 on the season.
“We expected Rutgers to be a tough opponent, seeing as they are the No. 8 team in the country,” said head coach Becky Carlson. “This was our first official game since joining Quinnipiac Athletics and we will continue to learn from each competition.”
Rutgers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two times in the first ten minutes of play. The Bobcats regrouped following the fast start, and held the Scarlet Knights scoreless for the next ten minutes of play. The defensive stand included several stops at the five meter line.
“We were slow getting to the rucks and found ourselves a step behind each time when their backline transitioned to attack,” said Carlson. “We broke down in the scrums and they just outmatched us in experience.”
Junior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) gave Quinnipiac a few moments of space with multiple solid kicks. The Bobcats were led by junior Colleen Doherty (Ashburnham, Mass.) who accounted for eight overall tackles, including seven in the first-half.
Quinnipiac’s forward effort was led by senior Marie Pescatore (North Reading, Mass.) and senior Katie Wood (Hamilton, N.J.). Pescatore led the team with seven attempts, while Wood finished second on the squad with two attempts.
The Bobcats return to action when they travel to face Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
