HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's rugby team lost a MetNY Conference match-up against Vassar College, 38-5, at the Quinnipiac Rugby Field in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in MetNY play while Vassar improves to 2-2 overall and in the MetNY.
Quinnipiac senior Alysha Andrews (Leola, Pa.) scored the Bobcats' only try of the game with less than five minutes to play in the first half. Andrews also recorded eight solo tackles in the game as well as four assisted tackles.
Quinnipiac freshman Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Fla.) had a team-high 12 solo tackles in addition to two assisted tackles. Cuellar also had a run over 20 yards and one steal at the tackle. Colleen Doherty (Ashburnham, Mass.) had 11 tackles, with three assisted tackles. Shannon Durkin (Oakland, Calif.) had nine solo tackles, four assisted tackles and one steal at the tackle.
Vassar's O'Mara Tayor had a try and four conversions for 13 points while Nicole Guerrero and Margaret Kwateng had two tries apiece while Emma Reddin also added one. O'Mara scored the game's first points, scoring 14 minutes into the game before Guerrero scored the first of her two tries, with Taylor providing the conversion to stake the Brewers to a 12-0 lead. Andrews' try cut into the Vassar lead, 12-5, heading into halftime.
Coming out of the intermission, Emma Reddin scored on an assist from Hannah Fink to push Vassar's lead to 17-5 before Taylor's conversion giving the Brewer's a 14-point lead, 19-5. Kwateng scored twice in the final 25 minutes of play, with Guerrero's second try sandwiched between the two scoring plays with Taylor providing two successful conversions to give Vassar a 38-5 win.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they host Eastern Illinois at 12 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Rugby Field on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University. EIU will be the first NCAA Division I opponent that Quinnipiac will host in program history and will be the second of three meeting between the two teams. Eastern Illinois won the first match-up, 24-0, on Sept. 18. The Bobcats will play three of their final four games on the road, with a match-up against Stony Brook on Oct. 23 at 12 p.m. as the Bobcats final home game of the 2011 season.
