WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Quinnipiac women's rugby team was defeated by West Chester, 29-3, in the team's final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in West Chester, Pa. Quinnipiac finishes the season with a 3-6-1 overall record, while West Chester improves to 5-1.
"I'm really proud of how the team performed today," said head coach Becky Carlson. "The back line was a wall all day. In addition, Elisa Cuellar had one of the best games of her rookie season, making several key steals at the tackle."
Junior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) collected Quinnipiac's three points on the afternoon with a penalty kick at the 21:46 mark into the first half.
The Bobcats' defensive effort was led by senior Jacqueline MacLearie (Tinton Falls, N.J.), who helped hold the Golden Rams to just one try through the first 30 minutes of action. Freshman Elisa Cuellar (Port Orange, Fla.) also chipped in defensively, as her steals at the tackle continually kept the Golden Rams at bay.
West Chester ran in its first try of the game at the 9:22 mark into the first half, but a failed two-point conversion kept the score at 5-0. The Bobcats responded with Orrico's 35 yard penalty kick to bring the score to 5-3, before West Chester ran in its second try to bring the teams into halftime with a 12-3 score.
The Golden Rams took control of the rucks in the second half, as well as earning the advantage in the lineouts. Despite Quinnipiac's continual defensive stands, West Chester was able to find its way through for three second-half tries, giving the game its final score of 29-3.
