Women’s Rugby Trumps Binghamton 91-0 on Sunday Sept. 9

Binghamton, N.Y. - Quinnipiac women's rugby defeated Binghamton University 91-0 on Sept. 9 at East Gym Track Stadium Field. The Bobcats featured 12 players in the scoring column en route to the largest margin of victory in Quinnipiac rugby history.

"You look at a score like this and you think that the offense was key, but in this sport it was collective effort by those players who did not rack up the scores," said head coach Becky Carlson.

Freshman Raechel Stimson (Cameron Park, Calif.) got the offense going on a 25- yard run posting her first try of her career early in the first half.  Senior Kristin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) led the team in points, with 24 and going 8-15 for conversions.

Sophomore Shannon Durkin (Oakland, Calif.), Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Fla.) and junior Allison Gnys (Cumberland, R.I.) combined for seven tries, Cuellar also adding an assist. Freshman Devon Vieira (Kent, Wash.), Tensi Phillips (Cheshire, Conn.), sophomore Jennifer Salomon (Paramus, N.Y.), and seniors Jacqueline Maclearie (Tinton Falls, N.J.), Nancy Dunn (Moscow, Pa.), Colleen Doherty (Ashburnham, Mass.), and Katie Wood (Hamilton, N.J.) all had one try a piece.

"Open-side flanker senior, Megan Hannemann, Devon Vieira, Jennifer Salomon, Katie Wood played tremendous; which is proof that the skill and effort in getting the ball down the field is just as important as making the try," said Carlson, "I am very proud of them for keeping up the momentum, but we still have much to work on."

In the second half, Binghamton tried to challenge the Bobcats' defensive unit on each kick off by kicking towards the weak-side. However the strategy played into Quinnipiac favor with great support on the inside from the defense; who reset effectively to gain ten to fifteen yards at a time. The Bobcats added 57 points in the second half alone preserving the shutout for the victory.

The Bobcats host their first home match on Sunday September 16, when Quinnipiac takes on the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz on QU Rugby Field. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
