Women's Rugby Upends Stony Brook 66-0
Stony Brook, N.Y. – Senior Nancy Dunn (Moscow, Pa.) carried the Bobcats with three tries to lead Quinnipiac over the Seawolves of Stony Brook on Sunday, Oct.7 at the Stony Brook Campus Recreation Field. The outside center added three tries and two assists for Quinnipiac to lead them to a 66-0 win on the dreary afternoon. With the victory, Quinnipiac remains undefeated as they improve to 6-0 and 5-0 in Tri-State Conference play while Stony Brook drops to 1-4 on the year.
"It was very tough to hold on to the ball today passing in our back line," Said head coach Becky Carlson, "We came out flat in the first ten minutes and barely stopped two long runs by Stony Brook which forced us to defend our own 22."
Senior Megan Hannemann (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Tesni Phillips (Cheshire, Conn.) registered two tries a piece for Quinnipiac. While seniors Katie Wood ( Hamilton, N.J.) and Colleen Doherty (Ashburnham, Mass.), sophomores Shannon Durkin(Oakland, Calif) and Raechel Stimson(Cameron Park, Calif.), and freshman Devon Vieira (Kent, Wash.) each added to the scoreboard a try a piece to the Bobcats sixth straight victory with 60 points. Hannemann, Vieira, Doherty, Marie Pescatore (North Reading, Mass.) and Elisa Cuellar (Sebastian, Fla.) also helped with assists for the Bobcats.
"Megan Hannemann and Jacqueline Maclearie took the ball at pace all day and we gained huge momentum from their energy in the middle of the field. Devon Vieira and Hannemann had their best game so far," said Carlson. "Shannon Durkin saw action in the forwards this game starting at 8-man and true to form she made several great runs forcing the Seawolves to commit 3 or 4 players to a tackle in order to bring her down."
Senior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) went 1 for 5 in conversion points and junior Allison Gnys (Cumberland, R.I.) went 2 for 4 to help increase Quinnipiac's margin of victory. The Bobcats outmatched the Seawolves in the scrums winning 10 of 17 and successfully earning 9 of 14 lineouts.
The Bobcats continue their season against Tri-State Conference opponent Hofstra University on Sunday, Oct. 14, at home on the QU Rugby Field. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. The Flying Dutchmen are 0-3 in conference play and the Bobcats are looking to keep their unbeaten streak alive this season.
