Women’s Rugby Downs UMass, 94-5

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's rugby team defeated the UMass Amherst Minutewomen, 94-5, on Saturday, Oct. 12 for its third straight win of the season. The Bobcats are now 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast conference. The win gives Quinnipiac a 9-3-1 all-time record on the Mount Carmel campus.

The final result was the highest winning margin for the Bobcats this season.  So far this year, Quinnipiac has outscored their opponents, 291-128.

A tremendous team effort propelled Quinnipiac to the team's 22nd win over the last two seasons. Shannon Durkin (Oakland, Calif.) and Natalie Kosko (Sebastian, Fla.) led Quinnipiac's attack with four tries apiece, while senior Allison Gnys (Cumberland, R.I.), junior Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Fla.) and sophomore Devon Vieira (Kent, Wash.) also had 10 points apiece.

Senior Elena Orlando (Winters, Calif.), junior Jennifer Salomon (Garnerville, N.Y.) and freshmen Christie Albers (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Hailey Wyatt (Breckenridge, Colo.) each garnered five points for the Bobcats. Tayler Schussler (Westminster, Md.) chipped in with two conversions and senior Nancy Dunn (Moscow, Pa.), Cuellar and Schussler all had an assist in the winning effort.

Quinnipiac scored early and often in this one, as Kosko and Dunn connected just minutes into the game.  The Minutewomen, unfazed by the score, would answer back at the 17-minute mark with a try by Emily Stone to tie the score up at 5-5. However, that would be the only time UMass would cross the line during the match.

The first of 89 straight points came from Vieira, who crossed the goal line for a 10-5 lead, which improved to 12-5 after a conversion from Gnys. After that, Durkin would go back-to-back completing two tries; one of the tries coming off a 40-yard run to give Quinnipiac a commanding 24-5 lead. Before the halftime whistle, Orlando extended the lead to 29-5 off a pass from Cuellar, leaving an insurmountable deficit for the Minutewomen.

The second half surge started early. Albers opened the scoring summary in the second half with a 65-yard run for the try. Senior Allison Gnys added a successful conversion to give the Bobcats a 36-5 lead.  Vieira followed with her second try of the game off of a pass from Schussler, with Cuellar, Kosko and Durkin scoring next for the Bobcats. Haley Wyatt was next, taking a pass from Jennifer Salomon into the end zone to make it, 70-5. The Bobcats would go on to score four more times before closing out the game with a final score of 94-5.

The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday when they meet intrastate rival UConn on Saturday, Oct. 19. Quinnipiac will meet the Huskies for a 12 p.m. kickoff at Depot Field on the Storrs Campus.
