Women's Soccer Falls To Lehigh, 2-0

HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior goalkeeper Kendra Margulies (Weston, Mass.) recorded a career-high 13 saves as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team lost to Lehigh University, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field. The Bobcats drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 4-1-1.

Lehigh opened the scoring in the 31st minute to earn the 1-0 lead. After receiving a pass inside the 18-yard box, Natalie Hojnacki twisted around a Bobcat defenseman and shot the ball over the head of goalkeeper Kendra Margulies (Weston, Mass.). The goal was assisted by Glynn Fitzer.

The Mountain Hawks scored again just minutes later in the first half. Jana Basubas picked up a blocked shot inside the goal box after a Lehigh corner kick and tipped the ball over a diving Margulies for the 2-0 lead. The goal was unassisted.

The Bobcats best scoring opportunity came early in the second half. Sophomore Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) ran in on net as sophomore Chelsea Smith (Terryville, Conn.) took a hard shot from the left side that Lehigh goalkeeper Lauren Mains blocked in front of the goal. Edwards got her foot on the ball and tried to flick it over Mains, but the goalkeeper got her hand on the ball and deflected to a defender who kicked it out of play.

Margulies recorded her career-high mark as she made 13 saves in net for the Bobcats. Main had five saves in the shutout for Lehigh.

The Bobcats return to action Friday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Siena for a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
