Women's Soccer Falls To Army, 3-0

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's soccer team was defeated by Army, 3-0, in its season-opener at Clinton Field in West Point, N.Y. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 0-1, while the Black Knights improve to 3-1-0, overall.

"The result was disappointing and they punished our mistakes, but we have a lot to build on," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "Furtuna Velaj and Kristina Del Mistro both had really good games."

Junior Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) started in goal for the Bobcats, making one save in the game. Starting in net for the Black Knights was junior Monica Lee who made three saves overall.

The Bobcats created several scoring opportunities, including a tremendous shot taken from the left side of the field from freshman Aine McKeever (Derry City, Ireland), which just missed the far right post, in the 21st minute of play. Towards the end of the first half, Quinnipiac had another chance to score after a corner kick by Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) was drilled into the box to senior Lauren Peacock (Hopedale, Mass.), who headed the ball wide. Overall, Quinnipiac took ten shots from seven of its players.

The three goals produced by Army were all scored in the first half of play. After a forced turnover seventeen minutes into the game, Army's An Kim scored the Black Knights' first goal and her first of the season, from a shot at the top of the box. The second goal was scored by Army's Erringer Helbling, also her first of the season, off of a long pass from Kim in the 22^nd minute of play. Shortly after, Kim scored her second goal of the game off of a free kick, right outside of the box.

The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 when they face Lehigh University in a non-conference game in Bethlehem, Pa. at 1 p.m.
