Women's Soccer Defeats Rhode Island, 1-0
HAMDEN, Conn. -
Sophomore Jillian Strassner (Avon, Conn.) scored her first goal of
the season, as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team beat
the University of Rhode Island, 1-0, in a hard-fought match at the
Quinnipiac Soccer Field. With their second win of the season, the
Bobcats improve to 2-4 on the year, while the Rams fall to 0-7-1 on
the season.
"We worked hard and
caused (Rhode Island) problems," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "We
limited their chances. Even though we were tired and beat up, we
didn't really allow them to get in behind us."
Strassner scored the
game's lone goal in the 18th minute of play from a
corner kick taken by freshman Aine McKeever (Derry City, Ireland).
The ball was crossed into the middle of the box when Strassner took
the ball down and drove the ball high into the back of the net.
Quinnipiac took 11 shots in the game, coming from six of its
players.
Quinnipiac goalie
Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) made seven saves in earning the
victory. Rhode Island's goalkeeper Sasha Reiber made a total of
three saves.
Quinnipiac looks
ahead to next Sunday, Sept. 26 when it plays their first conference
match-up against Central Connecticut State University.
"Historically,
Central/Quinnipiac can become a physical battle and in times past
we haven't been quite ready for it," said Clarke. "This weekend,
and the games to date, certainly have us going in where we know we
can handle a physical team and we can handle a very good team."
The game is scheduled
to begin at noon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field in Hamden,
Conn.
