HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) of the Quinnipiac women's soccer team were recently named New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England for Division I. Velaj was selected to the All-New England first team, while Edwards garnered second team honors.
Velaj receives the first team accolade after leading the Bobcats with 14 points and six goals during the 2011-12 season. Velaj started in each of Quinnipiac’s 16 games, adding two assists on the year. Although this is the first time Velaj has been recognized with the first-team award, the 5-6 forward/midfielder received All-New England second team honors for the past three seasons. Recently, Velaj was chosen to play in the 2011 NEWISA Senior Bowl, where she tallied an assist.
“The All-New England selection is another good honor for Furtuna,” said Head Coach Dave Clarke. “She’s in good competition and it’s a validation for some of her performances against the non-conference opposition. To go out again with another All-New England accolade is credit for Furtuna and the program.”
Edwards earns her first All-New England laurel after ranking second on the team with nine points in her junior campaign. Edwards made 15 starts, notched three goals and tied for a team-high three assists while leading the Bobcats’ midfield and defense.
“Shauna’s recognition is well deserved,” said Clarke. “It’s been a long process with getting her to believe in the ability that she has. “As we went through the season, I think she started to understand that she can contribute more to the team and she did. For her, this may be the first of a lot of recognition in the next twelve months.”
Quinnipiac was the only Northeast Conference institution recognized in the NEWISA All-New England Division I women’s soccer poll.
