HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team lost to Lehigh, 4-2, in its home opener on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 0-4-1 on the year, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 2-2-1 overall.

The first three goals of the game came within 2 minutes of each other. Lehigh’s Genna Pepe scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute, followed by teammate Murphee Greeley, who put the Mountain Hawks ahead, 2-0, on another unassisted goal a minute after Pepe’s goal.

Down 2-0, Quinnipiac junior Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) narrowed the gap immediately as she scored her first goal of the year. After senior Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) passed to Kemesha Woodfine (Stamford, Conn.), Woodfine then crossed the ball into the box where she found Edwards for the one-timer in the 21st minute of play.

Five minutes into the second half, Lehigh increased its lead, 4-1, when Paige Dyrek and Greeley each scored a goal for the Mountain Hawks. Dyrek scored in the 51st minute off a deflection, while Jana Basubas earned the assist for Greeley’s second goal of the contest in the 52nd minute.

The Bobcats continued to battle as senior Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored her third goal of the season in the 86th minute. Velaj shot the ball into the lower-left corner of the net off of a deflection.

Overall, both teams tallied 19 shots in the game. Quinnipiac senior goalie Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) made eight saves in the match-up, while Lehigh keeper Ashley Blanks had seven stops in net.

Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
