NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team fell, 2-0, at Yale University on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 0-3-1 on the year, while Yale improves to 2-2-2 overall.

The Bobcats created a solid chance, 25 minutes into play, when Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) took the ball from midfield and dribbled down the left side of the pitch, passing to Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.). Once Velaj beat a Bulldogs defender on the wing, she crossed the ball and found Crystal Burns (Overland Park, Kan.) who directed a shot towards the left side of the net. The shot beat the keeper, but was blocked by a Yale player on the goal line.

In the 36th minute, Yale took a 1-0 lead when senior Emma Mullo made a pass inside the box to freshman Melissa Gavin who blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

Quinnipiac goalie Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) kept the score at 1-0 as she made a tremendous save on a shot taken by Gavin inside the box with only one minute remaining in the first half.

Both Quinnipiac and Yale continued to battle throughout the second stanza. With less than 20 minutes to play, the Bobcats’ Burns ripped a shot from the top of the box that went just wide of the right goal post. Five minutes later, Kristina Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) slipped a ball through the Yale defense to Velaj, but Yale’s keeper came out and stole the ball.

The Bulldogs increased their lead, 2-0, on a Yale goal by Frannie Coxe, who scored on a cross from Mary Kubiuk in the 81st minute.

The Bobcats return to action when they play Lehigh in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn.
