Hamden, Conn. - Senior goalkeeper Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) of the women's soccer team was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced on Monday, August 27, 2012 by the league office. Kelley played a large role in the Bobcats victory over BIG EAST opponent Providence College in their season-opener this past weekend.
"Jill had a good game against Providence and earned her recognition from the NEC," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "She will be the first to acknowledge that the shutout was a team effort and that the players in front of her share the honor."
The Simsbury, Conn. native made five saves in 90 minutes of action against the Friars to preserve her first shutout of the season. In her 50th game between the posts, Kelley collected the 11th shutout of her career. Kelly had a strong season-opener taking on 10 shots in the contest, making four saves in the second half alone. The veteran keeper is now 1-0 on the season and is the first player of the year for Quinnipiac to be recognized by the NEC for the 2012 season.
The Bobcats will return to action Friday August 31, when they take on University of Vermont in a non-conference match-up. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on the QU Soccer Field.
