Larkin's First Career Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Past Hartford, 1-0
HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman Shannon Larkin (Burlington, Conn.) scored her first career goal on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over Hartford at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 1-1 all-time against the Hawks and, more importantly, 4-0-1 overall. This marks the longest unbeaten streak to begin a season in program history.
Head Coach Dave Clarke's defensive philosophy paid dividends early on, as the Bobcats full-field pressure produced the game's first goal in the 11th minute of play. Quinnipiac forced a turnover in the middle of the field and worked the ball to freshman Amanda Barroca (Bellmore, N.Y.) on the right side of the field. Barroca raced down the line past the last defender and whipped in a cross to the penalty area. Larkin collected the pass and calmly tucked a shot into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the first half between the intrastate rivals featured a defensive battle. QU controlled a 3-2 edge in shots, and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, but neither team really threatened offensively. At the sound of the halftime whistle, Quinnipiac held on to a 1-0 advantage.
After the intermission, the intensity picked up as Hartford frantically looked for the equalizer. However, the next best chance came for the Bobcats, when Barroca nearly netted her first career tally midway through the stanza. The Bellmore, N.Y. native once again raced down the line past the Hawks' backline, cut to the middle and ripped a shot towards net. Unfortunately, Erin Quinlin was up for the challenge and held onto the ball to preserve the one-goal deficit.
With less than 15 minutes showing on the clock, senior Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) and the Bobcats defense needed to shine; and the formidable backline did just that. Kelley only needed to make one save in the match, but kept the defense poised for another shutout. The Bobcats disallowed Hartford to score en route to Kelley's 22nd career win in a Bobcats' uniform.
Quinnipiac returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 14 when the Bobcats play host to Harvard University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field.
