Jersey City, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday after defeating the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 3-0. The win came in the Bobcats first-ever conference game as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Freshman Jessica Fontaine (Enfield, Conn.) led the Bobcats with a goal and two assists.
"We played well and the 3-0 win was no less than we deserved," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "The key to victory was scoring early in both halves. The goals settled us down and took a lot of pressure off the players, allowing them to play the way they have trained. We have had a tough non-conference schedule and the pay off was today's performance and result. The bonus was getting a lot of players playing time."
Fontaine, the 2012 CJSA Female & NCSAA Connecticut High School Player of the Year, picked up her second goal of the season off an assist from Jess Lavoie (Berlin, Conn.) in the eighth minute. Fontaine was not done however, assisting on goals scored by senior captain Beck Kiting (Canberra, Australia) in the 48th minute and a first career goal from freshman Kelly Caruso (Rocky Hill, Conn.) in the 51st minute. The Bobcats were attacking from the start and held the advantage in shots (14-5) and corner kicks (10-2). 23 total players would receive playing time for the Bobcats on the day.
Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.) and Tori Graessle (Millburn, N.J.) kept a clean sheet for the Bobcats. Grodzki made two saves in 76 minutes of play while Graessle played 14 minutes in goal. Molly O'Halloran made four saves on the day for Saint Peter's.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they host their first MAAC game against Siena. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn.
