Women's Soccer Participates In CIAC Unified Soccer Tournament
Cheshire, Conn– The Quinnipiac University Women's Soccer team volunteered at the CIAC Unified Soccer Tournament on Tuesday at Quinnipiac Park in Cheshire. Members of the team reffed, kept the clock, and taught middle schoolers the game of soccer at each field. The team's participation in the CIAC Unified Soccer Tournament is now an annual tradition for the program.
"Today's event is the biggest one we have ever attended and to see over 20 teams from 13 schools participate is tremendous," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "It is always great to see players play soccer for the pure joy of the sport and it reminds my players of why they first started playing the game. It is also important that they understand how fortunate they are to be student-athletes at a high level and Unified Soccer is a very humbling experience for them."
Unified Sports® is a registered program of Special Olympics that combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without intellectual disability on sports teams for training and competition. All Unified Sports® players, both athletes and special partners, are of similar age and matched sport skill ability. Unified Sports® teams are placed in competitive divisions based on their skill abilities, and range from training divisions (with a skill-learning focus) to high level competition.
In 1992, as part of an effort to reach school-aged athletes, Connecticut Special Olympics formed a partnership with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference to bring Unified Sports® to Connecticut's schools. The CIAC/Special Olympics Unified Sports® Program operates throughout the school year and closely follows the school calendar. Unified Sports® events are organized each sport season for elementary, middle and high school students. All public and parochial schools in Connecticut are invited to participate.
Quinnipiac has their next game on Saturday when they host the Niagara Purple Eagles. Kickoff is at 1 pm at the QU Soccer Field.
