HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac's 2014 women's soccer schedule features 16 regular season contests, nine Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents and six home matches at the QU Soccer Field.
Entering his 16th season with the Bobcats, head coach Dave Clarke looks to guide Quinnipiac back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. Quinnipiac will need to work its way through a difficult MAAC schedule that featured three teams with 11 or more wins last season.
After a pair of exhibition games at New Hampshire (Aug. 15) and Holy Cross (Aug. 18), the 2014 regular season officially kicks off on Aug. 22 when the Bobcats travel up north to the University of Maine. The Black Bears finished 9-5-5 last season and advanced to the America East Semifinals before being ousted by Stony Brook by way of penalty kicks.
Quinnipiac follows with three straight road games, two of which require a flight across the country to California. The Bobcats take on Pacific University (Aug. 29) and UC Davis (Aug. 31) during a three-day road trip, before returning to Connecticut to take on cross-town rival Yale on Sept. 5. The Bobcats and the Bulldogs renew a rivalry that hasn't seen action since 2011. That year, Yale came out victorious with a 2-0 win.
One last tune-up game stands in the way of the Bobcats before opening conference play, Quinnipiac's home-opener against Vermont on Saturday, Sept. 13. Vermont joined Maine the America East Tournament last year but fell short in the quarterfinals. After that, the highly anticipated conference schedule begins with a midway matinee against Iona College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the QU Soccer Field.
Quinnipiac wraps up the month of September with a trip to Buffalo to take on Niagara (Oct. 1) before encountering the bulk of its schedule in October. The Bobcats have four home games – Fairfield (Oct. 1), Canisius (Oct. 4), Marist (Oct. 15) and Saint Peter's (Oct. 25) – and five away games – Brown (Oct. 7), Rider (Oct. 11), Monmouth (Oct. 18), Manhattan (Oct. 22) and Siena (Oct. 29) - in the month. Quinnipiac will host Senior Day prior to the game against the Peacocks.
After the regular-season finale against Siena, the MAAC Championships take place in the first week of November. The MAAC has added two more teams to the tournament, allowing the top six teams to compete for the league's automatic bid. The quarterfinals are set for Nov. 1; the semifinals on Nov. 7; and the championship will take place on Nov. 9. The NCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 14.
In its first season in the MAAC, Quinnipiac posted a 3-3-4 record in conference play and owned one of the best defenses in the league. The Bobcats' season came to a close in the MAAC Tournament after a tough 1-0 loss to Manhattan in the opening round. Three players were honored with All-MAAC honors in Jess Lavoie, Jessica Fontaine and Joanna Proctor – all three of which return in 2014.
