Women's Tennis Picked To Win Sixth Straight NEC Title
HAMDEN, Conn. The five-time defending Northeast Conference champion Quinnipiac University women's tennis team has been selected by the league's coaches to win a sixth straight title, the conference office today announced. The Bobcats took six first-place votes, while Long Island and Fairleigh Dickinson received two first-place votes each. The Blackbirds took the second spot in the poll while the Knights were selected third.
"The truth is we must work real hard to be able to fulfill the coaches' prediction," said Head Coach Michael Quitko. "We were chosen primarily because we won last season and because of our history. So now we must prove that we are worthy. We are not going for number six, but our first championship in 2009."
Intrastate NEC foe Sacred Heart was picked fourth, while Mount St. Mary's, Monmouth, Saint Francis (Pa.), Robert Morris, Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.) round out the 10-team field.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, when they play host to future NEC foe Bryant. Matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
