WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Mary Wilson (Greensburg, Pa.), freshman Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and the doubles duo of junior Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flights as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team wrapped up action at the West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational Saturday.
Wilson won a pair of matches as the No. 6 seed to reach the quarterfinals of the top singles flight. She defeated Stony Brook's Kathrine Hanson, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6, in the Round of 32, before breezing past Duquesne's Zena Williams, 6-2, 6-2, in the Round of 16. Wilson's run ended in the quarterfinals, as she fell to third-seeded Magdalena Ploch of UMass, 6-3, 6-2.
Cantor, playing initially in the Round of 16 by virtue of a Round of 32 bye as the No. 3 seed, defeated West Virginia's Emily Mathis, 6-4, 6-3, in her first match. She was then defeated in the quarterfinals by Army's Erin Colton, the No. 6 seed, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
Markison and Viebrock advanced to the Round of 16 by virtue of a bye as the No. 5 seed, before defeating Syracuse's Allison Haynes and Alessondra Parra, 8-4. The duo fell in the quarterfinals against Binghamton's Marina Bykovskaya and Yulia Smirnova, 8-5. Bykovskaya and Smirnova, who upset the top-seeded duo in the tournament in the Round of 16, will play for the top-flight championship tomorrow against UMass' Candynce Boney and Maude Leluyse.
Also earning wins were sophomore Natalie Duckor (North Tustin, Calif.) and the doubles duo of junior Ali Warshavsky (East Hartford, Conn.) and Carly Loewenstein (Armonk, N.Y.). Duckor defeated Army's Kari Pope, 6-1, 6-1, in the 4th Singles Round of 32, before being defeated by UConn's Alexa Gregory, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16.
Warshavsky and Loewenstein defeated Providence's Melanie Albert and Jennifer Cusack, 8-6, before falling to top-seeded Fanny Charliquart and Aylin Mehter of Stony Brook, 8-4, in the Round of 16. Charliquart and Mehter have since advanced to play in the 2nd Doubles Finals against second-seeded Geraldine Leong and Kristen Lim of Cornell.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, October 13, when they play host to intrastate rival UConn in their first dual match of the season. Matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
